Well, here goes. #4 is on the bench and the B/S are bubinga. Everything is going great when bending the sides I crack them. Both of them. In the same spot. (I always try to leave my sides as thick as possible)

Ok, not so bad it's a small crack I fill with CA and continue the bend. When done I measure and I see that after I contour my sides the crack will be cut/planed away. (it's near the upper bout right on the curve at theback of the guitar)

Then I notice, the other side with the same crack is at the upper bout right at the curve, but on the front of the guitar.

Yep you guessed it I bent one side inside out...

Well after the requisit cursing and then thinking " well it's tight grained and figued so maybe no one will notice" I decided I need to buy another set of sides... @#&%?


Anyone have an idea who's gonna have the best price? They are the mottled bees wing pattern.

before you give up on it, try to reheat, straighten, and rebend.

Yep, been there done that. I rebent a oregon myrtle side set back straight by setting it on a concrete floor and wetting it, then putting the heating blanket on it. I straightened it out, then rebent. I had some flat spots, but just barely, and I saved a nice set. Give it try! You have NOTHING to lose.

The crack could have been a stress fracture already there. Let me know if rebending it doesn't work out. I just bought a board with some nice beeswing in it. Not sure 100% if I have enough extra for a spare set of sides, but I can look.

I have rebent side using blankets and didn't straighten out just went slow and did waist and then bouts like normal, didn't have a problem. I normally bend having sides pretty much as thin as possible and almost if not at final thickness. Rebend way I do, is akward but pretty easy.

I tried to rebend it. The crack gave me fits and I eventually ended up scorching it. So I just ordered a new set from LMI. I'll sand these down a lot thinner before bending them. First ones I left at 3mm.

I see a lot of Bubinga rosettes in my future...

Ron, you can always cut them up for binding. I occasionally buy up cheap sets online with no intention of using them for anything but that purpose.
